Billye Freeman Bryant age 74, of Ahoskie, NC passed awayMonday, July 12, 2016 at her home.

Billye was born April 5, 1942 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Walton Ward Bryant and Hazel White Bryant.

She worked for many years at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital as a Nurses Aide and was an EMT with Harrellsville Rescue Squad and Hertford County EMS.

She is survived by two sisters, Joe Bryant Ward of Winton, NC and Parker Bryant Cline of Manassas, VA.

There are no services planned at this time.

Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC is assisting the Bryant Family with arrangements.

Chivon Amber Cornett age 37, of Skippers, Va passed away Wednesdaay, July 13, 2016 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, VA.

Chivon was born October 12, 1978 in Pasco County, Florida. She worked as a pharmacy tech at Walmart in Emporia, VA.
She is survived by her mother, Cheryl Anne Russell. Her father, Carroll W. “C.W.” Tharpe Jr. . Her four children, Dillin, Angel Nicole, Jon and Caleb. Four brothers, Howard Martin, Clint Martin, Tommy Martin and Todd Middelbrook. Also her grandfather, Carroll W. Tharp Sr.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Chivon's Life will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Doors of Praise and Worship, Bay Street, Gaston, NC with Pastor Russell Collins officiating.
In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to Doors of Praise And Worship, P.O. Box 775, Gaston, NC 27832 where a fund has been established for Chivon's children.

Mr. Richard Lee Davis age 80, of Ahoskie, NC passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Vidant Hospice House in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Davis was born September 1, 1935 in Murfreesboro, NC, the son of the late Albert Jefferson Davis and Erma Lee Matthews Davis McGraw. He was also predeceased by a sister, Alice Faye Davis.
Mr. Davis was a retired supervisor with H.T. Jones Lumber Company with 37 years of service. He was a former member of the National Guard, past Master of Davie Lodge #39, Ahoskie, NC and a member of Union Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting and gardening and loved his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathryn “ Kathy” Hall Davis. His children, Richard Allen “Ricky” Davis and his wife Helen, Christopher Neal Davis and his wife Wendy, Kim Davis Watson and her husband Robert and Heather Davis Bourn and her husband Tracy. His sister, Betty Jean Parker and her husband Beryl. His grandchildren, Clint Davis, Christopher Hunter Smith, Joseph Acosta, Trent Davis, Marykathryn Acosta, Alexis Davis and Madison Davis. Also several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Vidant Hospice House, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834-2818.

Mrs. Domach was born February 5, 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Russell Paque and Viola Callis Pague.
She is survived by her husband Ralph Domach and a son, Michael Domach.

Mr. William Ray “Billy” Matthews age 68, of Aulander, NC passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Matthews was born January 30, 1948 in Bertie county, NC, the son of the late Henry Matthews and Daisy Broglin Matthews.

He was also predeceased by two siblings, Jessie Cobb and Claude Matthews. He was retired from the NC Department of Transportation with 30 years of service
He is survived by his wife Nancy Arlene Rose Matthews. His children, Clinton Ray Matthews and his wife April Swank Matthews, Billie Matthews Carroll and Jerry Chumbley, and Susan Hope Barmer . His step children, Brian Lee and his wife Crystal and David Lee. His grandchildren, Zachery William Matthews, Grayson Ray Matthews, KC Carroll, Joey Carroll, Brianna Carroll, Lauren Barmer, William Barmer. His step grandchildren, Brittany Lee, Madison Lee, Gabby Lee, Peyton Lee, and James Austin Lee. His great grandchildren, Bryson Carroll, Raigan Carroll, Paisely Carroll, Brantley Carroll, Dillon Barmer and Austin Daughtrey. His siblings, Martha and Robert Mizelle, Dessie White, Edna and Thomas Baker, Shirley Matthews, Mary Jane Felton, Henry and Barbara Matthews, Bobby and Jean Matthews and Jimmy Wayne and Patricia Matthews.

Dwayne was born November 5, 1964 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his father Oscar Lewis Edwards and an infant sister, Cynthia Marie Edwards.

He is survived by his wife, Misty Edwards. His daughters, Katherine Edwards, Victoria Edwards , Stephanie Edwards Davis and Courtney Edwards. His mother, Shelby Davis Edwards. Two sisters, Sheryl Edwards and Christina Knotts. His grandchildren, Emma McElwe and Keegan McElwe. His nieces and nephews, Jessica Simmons, Zachery Edwards, Nathan Dixon, Ethan Dixon, Madeline Knotts, Mikenley Knotts and Maci Knotts.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Dwayne’s life will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Curtis Alton Bass Sr.

Curtis Alton Bass Sr. age 86, of Pleasant Hill, NC passed away August 12, 2016.

Alton was born in Northampton County, NC on January 28, 1930 to Lloyd Alton and Mollie G. Bass. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances Reid Bass and three sisters, Inez Mayle, Virginia Glover and Agnes Moore.
He is survived by his son, Curtis Bass Jr. and his wife Lola. One sister, Lucille Jones and many nieces and nephews.
Alton was born and raised in the Bethel Community near Seaboard. He graduated from Seaboard High School where he had played on the high school basketball team. In 1953 he married
Mary Frances Reid of Roanoke Rapids and shortly after was inducted into the US Army. He served 18 months in Japan during the Korean War as a cryptographer, then returned to Northampton County to farm. After farming he worked several positions before finishing his career with as an officer with the Department of Corrections.
Alton had a strong belief in God and was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a choir member for many years and also served his church over his life as sexton, treasurer, teacher and deacon.
Alton always had a love of softball. He played on his church softball team and later was a certified umpire for high school league softball.
He was a longtime member of Seaboard Lions Club.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Rick Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church building fund.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Thomas Wayne 'Tommy' Joyner Sr.

Mr. Thomas Wayne “Tommy” Joyner Sr., age 67, of Littleton, NC passed away Monday, August 22, 2016.

Tommy was born on December 4, 1948 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Thomas Mason Joyner and Gwendolyn Butts Joyner.

Tommy was a salesman for many years and an accomplished musician. He inspired many family members to pursue music and shared his passion for music with everyone he came in contact with.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kay Gordon Joyner; his children, Ashley Michelle Joyner, Thomas Wayne Joyner Jr. and his wife Mary Beth Joyner, Kevin Daniel Joyner and his wife Elizabeth Ashley Joyner and their children Caroline Faith Joyner and Luke Mason Joyner; his sisters Wanda Joyner Moore and fiancé Doug Bennett and Gloria Jean Merritt and her husband David Merritt. A special thank you to life long friends Pati Gordon Henderson (sister in-law), Russell Moore (nephew), Gordon Gray, Darrell Taylor, Steve Brantley, and Buddy and Rhonda Myers for all of their support.
A celebration of life event for Tommy will be held at The Lake Gaston Resort. 300 Lake Resort Drive Gasburg, VA 23857 at the Clubhouse (casual attire), Saturday, August 27, 2016 from 2:00 until 5:00 PM.

Peggy Ann Cornett Cook age 72, entered into her eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, August 25, 2016.

Peggy was born August 3, 1944 in Southampton County, VA, the daughter of the late Horace Sheffield Cornett and Virginia May Holt Cornett. She was also preceded in death by her husband Herbert William Cook, a brother Russell Cornett, a grandson, Dakota Draper, a brother-in-law, Ted Hawk and son-in-law, Gary Baines.

She was a homemaker and dearly loved by all of her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Lisa Baines, Betty Grant and her husband James and Joanie Navitsky and her husband Eric. Two sons, Sam Cook (Cheryl) and Timmy Cook (Tami). Her sisters, Patricia Bausone (Geno), Linda Hawk and Mary Jones (Ray). Her grandchildren, Charlene Barnes, Brandon Cook, Devin Cook, Nicole Cook, Ashley Cook, Layla Cook, Jacob Draper, Dillon Draper and Brent Draper. Two great grandchildren, Jacob Shifflett and Ryder Barnes. Many Step grandchildren and many step great grandchildren.
Also many nieces and nephews.
Services to Celebrate Peggy’s Life will be held Monday, August 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC.

Martha Elizabeth Griffin Peavy age 91, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 at Rich Square Health Care in Rich Square, NC.

Mrs. Peavy was born February 27, 1925 in New Broughton, Alabama, the daughter of the late Grover Griffin and Nina Jo Perkins Griffin. She was also pre-deceased by her husband,
David Lloyd Trawick and a son, David Trawick.
She is survived by her son, Christopher Trawick and his wife Edna. Her brother, Lamar Griffin. Two grandchildren, Ellen and Chad Trawick. Two step children, Ollie Jernigan and Eddie Dorsey.
Also many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held this coming week at New Broughton Cemetery in New Broughton, Alabama.
Local arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home and arrangements in Alabama are being handled by Sorrell's Funeral Home, Enterprise, Alabama.

Larry was born March 13, 1947 In Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son Albert Lee Conner and Nelle Maddleton Connor.

He was a member of the Gaston Fire Department and Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad.
Larry served in many capacities in Northampton and Halifax Counties, working with the following agencies:
Gaston Volunteer Fire Department 1965-1986. Highest rank held was Assistant Chief.
Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad 1986-2016. Highest rank held was Vice-Commander.
Halifax EMS Authority 1990-1992
Gaston EMS 1994-1998
Northampton County EMS 1997-2000
Eastern Medical Transport 1998-2003

He is survived by his wife Ann Belinda Ennis Conner. His children, Christopher Steven Conner and Jason Sledge.
Six grandchildren.

Willis was born January 7, 1957 in Ahoskie, NC, the son of the late Ora Ray Dunlow and Janice Hurdle Dunlow.

Willis had a degree in Art and had taught commercial art at Chowan College.
He survived by his sister, Anita Dunlow and her fiancé Neil Ray, his brothers, Dennis Dunlow, Ronnie Dunlow and his wife Pam and Bobby Duncan and his wife Shannon. Also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Raleigh Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.

Tanya Laine Burt Brett, age 50, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward “Bama” Burt and her mother Betty James Burt.
She was active in the Charlotte area with the ECU Pirate Club chapter and the American Women’s Business Association.
She loved tennis, movies, books and Lake Gaston where she spent her summers growing up and spent a lot of time with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Mike Brett, her brother Travis Burt and wife Cassie Burt of Emerald Isle, NC. Her nephew, Branden Burt and wife Jessica of Angier, NC and her niece, Kirsten Burt of Emerald Isle, NC. Her mother and father in law, Peggy and Wayne Brett of Halifax, NC , brother-in-law, Mike Brett of Greenville, NC and many friends that were also her family.
Services for her Remembrance will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 136 Calvary Church Road, Littleton, NC.

Dr. Charles Clifton Harris

Dr. Charles Clifton Harris Sr. age 77, of Gaston, NC passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

Dr. Harris was born December 4, 1938 in Woodland, NC, the son of the late Joseph Henry Harris Sr. and Mary Hyde Harris.

He was a Baptist Minister for many years and served many churchs throughout his life. He served as minister of Winton Baptist Church, Winton, NC, Creeksville Baptist Church, Conway, NC and many others.
Dr. Harris retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Master Sgt. E.7. He received his doctorate degree at Southeastern Seminary and International Seminary.
He is survived by his wife, Faye White Harris, his three children, Angela Marie Harris, Teresa Lynn Robertson and Charles Clifton Harris Jr. His brothers, Thad Harris (Melinda) and Joseph Harris. His sister, Madge Harris. Five grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to celebrate Dr. Harris’s life.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home.
