Mrs. Meredith Ricks Flythe age 94, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016.

Mrs. Flythe was born September 14, 1921 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Grady Henry Ricks and Betty Futrell Ricks. She was also preceded in death by her husband A.V. Flythe Jr., a brother, Grady V. Ricks and her sisters, Ethelyn Willoughby, Cleo Overby, Betty Porter and Mary Davis.
She was a member of Conway United Methodist Church, Conway’s Woman’s Club and the Ladies Auxiliary Firemen of Conway. She retired from Union Camp Corp. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and visiting friends and family.
She is survived by her children, Rebecca Whitley, Diane Gray (Glenn), Joyce Sumner ( Charlie) and Ricky Flythe (Vickie). Nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren. Her sister-in-law Betty Holt(Larry) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Conway Cemetery in Conway, NC.
A special thank you to the staff and nurses at Rich Square Health Care for their special care they gave Mrs. Flythe.

Thomas Drew Jennings age 57, of Oak City, NC passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016 at his home.

Thomas was born March 14, 1959 in Georgia, the son of the late George Jennings and Carolyn Rosa Jennings.
He was also predeceased by a son, Drew Jennings and a granddaughter Alexica Jennings.
He was a welder by trade and formerly served in the US Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Doisy Cox Jennings, his children, Shaun Parton, Sheena Jennings and Derrick  Jennings, all of Kentucky. Five grandchildren, Little Shaun, Hailey, Alex, Cannon and Derrick. His sisters, Mary Jennings and Leslie Burkett and her husband Daryl and their son Darren.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 29, 2016 at Oak City Cemetery in Oak City, NC with Rev. Lyle R. Brackin officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC and other times at the  home.

Mr. Ora Ray Dunlow age 82 of Aulander, NC passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Dunlow was born September 11, 1933, in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Stanley Dunlow and Doris White Dunlow. He was also predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Janice Louise Hurdle Dunlow who passed away just 10 days before Mr. Dunlow, a brother David Dunlow and a niece Lisa Dunlow. He was a retired master carpenter .
He is survived by his children, Anita Dunlow and her fiancé Neil Ray, Dennis Dunlow, Willis Dunlow, Ronnie Dunlow and his wife Pam and Bobby Dunlow and his wife Shannon. His grandchildren, Dawson Dunlow, Landon Dunlow, Grant Dunlow, Allexis Dunlow, Jennifer Hyatt and Jordan Hyatt.
His brother, Jimmy Dunlow and his wife Macy and their children Denise Todd and James Dunlow. His sisters, Belinda Pritchard and Marie Vaughan and her son Mike Vaughan.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Ahoskie Church of God with Rev. Raleigh Johnson and Rev. Taylor Latham officiating. Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Hilda Faye Joyner Davidson age 85, of Kelford, NC passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016.

Mrs. Davidson was born August 31, 1930 in Edgecombe County, NC, the daughter of the late Arthur C. Joyner and Ethel Dixon Joyner. She was also predeceased by her husband Spurgeon L. Davidson.

She was longtime, faithful member of Kelford Baptist Church where she had served as church secretary. She was a retired seamstress and was known for her sewing and her love of cooking.
She is survived by her children, Sandy Davidson and his wife Diane of Rocky Mount, NC, Rev. Charles T. Davidson and his wife Susan of Seven Springs, NC, Allen Davidson and his wife Brenda of Tunnell Hill, Georgia and Chester Davidson of Kelford, NC. Seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Her brother, Alvin W. Joyner of Newport News, VA.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the
Kelford Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Spivey officiating. Burial will follow at the Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, in her name, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Gerald Joseph Earley age 84. passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at his home.

Gerald was born March 19, 1932 in Methuen, Mass, the son of the late James Earley and Doris Douglas Earley. He was also predeceased by two brothers, William Earley of Merrimac, Mass. and James Earley Jr. of Andover, Mass.
Gerald, AKA “Jerry” and “Poppie”, was a major in the US Marines and served his country for seventeen years.
In earlier years, he worked as a police officer with the Las Vegas Police Department and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Later he was a retired Major with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department in West Palm Beach, Florida.
He then moved from Florida to Roanoke Rapids and lived in the Double R City for approximately eleven years.
He is survived by his wife, Jeri Horne Earley, his son, Gerald J. Earley Jr. of Florida, stepsons, Cleo Bailey Jr. and Chris Bailey and his wife Mandy of Roanoke Rapids. His stepdaughter, Sondra Vann and her husband Danny of Conway, NC. His step-granddaughters, Dana Vann and Bailey Vann of Conway and Madison Bailey, Lizzie Pair and Exia Pair of Roanoke Rapids. His step-grandsons, Trey Bailey of Roanoke Rapids and Ty Bailey of California and step great granddaughter Carmen Bailey of Roanoke Rapids.
He was proud of his country and well loved by all who knew him. He will be missed.
His wish was to be cremated. There will be no services but the family requests your prayers.

Adolph Menjue Harrell age 83, of Ahoskie, NC passed away May 23, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Harrell was born September 15, 1932, the son of the late Raleigh Harrell and Nettie Sumner Harrell. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Walter Harrell, Ralph Harrell and Joseph Harrell and sisters, Evelyn Palma, Linda Martorano and Mary Lou Harrell.

He was a lifelong member of Center Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also served in the US Army from 1952 until 1954. He was a retired Postmaster.
He is survived by his wife Marie Harrell, his daughters, Cheryl Mizelle (Faron) and Cindi Jernigan (Vandy), his sons, Tim Harrell and Jerry Harrell (Natalie). His sisters, Barbara Perry, Lucy Paul, Faye Askew, Eleanor Runfola. His grandchildren, Erik Jernigan(Sherri), Brooks Jernigan (Kelly), Blane Jernigan (Morgan), Jordan Parker
(Brian), Jody Mizelle, Noah Harrell, T.C. Harrell (Moriah). His great grandchildren, Damon and Mason.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Center Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Mullens officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 331 Center Grove Road, Ahoskie, NC.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Center Grove Baptist Church or to Gideon"s International.

Brenda Williams Futrell

Mrs. Brenda Williams Futrell of Rich Square, NC passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Brenda was born February 17, 1949 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the youngest child of the late Russell Williams and Susie Clements Williams.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Walter Futrell and brother, James R. “Bing” Williams.

She was an active member of Rich Square United Methodist Church and a faithful employee of Purdue, INC of Lewiston, NC for over thirty nine years.  She retired in 2015.

She is survived by her devoted sister, Shirley Williams Pershing of Raleigh, NC.  Her brothers and sister-in-laws, Harold Williams (Shirley) of Littleton, NC, Archer Wray Williams (Ellen) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Barbara S. Williams of Battleboro, NC. Aunt Brenda will be greatly missed by a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Brenda’s Life will be held Sunday,

May 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC with Rev. Rob Licht officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be to Rich Square United Methodist Church, 263 South Main Street, Rich Square, NC 27869 or to Safe Haven For Cats, 8431 Garvey Drive # 137, Raleigh, NC 27616 in honor of Brenda’s cat Gracie, who was adopted there.

Mr. Michael Donald Slauzis age 72, of Rich Square, NC, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Slauzis was born March 22, 1944 in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Michael Mathew Slauzis and Ruth Mary O’Connell Slauzis. He was retired from the Red Cross and a veteran of the US Army. 

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hoggard Slauzis. His sons, Kevin Matthew Slauzis, Craig Andrew Slauzis and Sean Edward Slauzis. A sister, Alexandra O”Connell and a brother, Mark Slauzis. Four grandchildren, Amanda Slauzis, Jason Slauzis, Andrew Corbett and Brittany Sawyer.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Light House of Hope with Rev. Brian Jenkins officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mary Elizabeth Parks, age 72, of Jackson, NC passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.

Mary was born November 11, 1943, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Sam Lewis Parks and Lizzie Jones Parks.

She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, a former member of the Jackson Woman’s Club, where she had served as Christmas Parade chair person. She worked for many years at Odom Correctional Institute and was owner of Parks Realty Company.
She is survived by her husband, Dean Davis. Her sons, Charles Lane and his wife Laurel and David Lane and his wife Kim. Her sister’s, Shirley Parks Smith and Alice Parks Edmonds. Her brother, Pete Parks. Her grandchildren, Katherine Lane, Carrington Jones, Taylor Deckard and Chason Lane. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Rehoboth United Methodist Church , Jackson, NC. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Janie Robbins Burgess age 78, of Conway, NC, passed away Friday, June 10, 2016, at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Burgess was born March 2, 1938 in Rich Square, NC, the daughter of the late Robert Eugene Robbins Sr. and Alma Brown Robbins.
She was a member of Conway Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gurney O. Burgess Jr. Her children, Gurney Burgess III and his wife Joyce, Angela Burgess Freeman and her husband Brent and Joseph Henry Burgess and his wife Beth. A brother, Willie Robbins and a sister, Evelyn Robbins Hall. Six grandchildren, Samantha Matthews and her husband Brandon, Tyler Burgess, Matthew Burgess, Kody Allgood and his wife Jackie, Laura Ann Henderson and Bailey Holt.
A graveside service will be held Monday, June 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Conway Cemetery, Conway, NC with Rev. Randy Starkey officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.

Mr. David Kevin Britt, age 54, of Severn, NC passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016.

Kevin was born August 31, 1961, in Suffolk, VA, the son of Carol Martin Britt and the late Leslie Britt.
Kevin worked for Severn Peanut Company as line mechanic for many years and worked as a supervisor at Hampton Farms.
He was currently Fire Chief of the Severn Volunteer Fire Department and had been a member of the fire department for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Jean Piland Britt. His sons, Joshua David Britt and Dillon Kevin Britt. His mother, Carol Martin Britt. His brother, Barry Keith Britt. His uncles, Gene Martin, Ronald Owen Britt and Davis Bryant. Also several cousins.
Graveside services, with honors, will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Severn Cemetery, Severn, NC with Rev. Jim cox officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Severn Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 406, Severn, NC 27877.

Mrs. Ellen Pauline Callahan age 70, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Rich Square Manor in Rich Square, NC.

Mrs. Callahan was born January 30, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Thomas Murray and Pauline Gibson Murray.

She was also predeceased by her husband, William Edward Callahan.
She is survived by her children, Jeri Callahan Servais, Barbara Callahan Kenyon, Mary Callahan, Paula Callahan Backus, Billy Callahan and Brian Callahan.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to celebrate Mrs. Callahan's life.

William Mack Garris age 75, of Conway, NC passed away Friday, June 24, 2016 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC.

Mr. Garris was born March 28, 1941 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late John William Garris and Goldie Nicholson Garris.  He was also predeceased by a brother, Quinton Garris and a sister, Thadys Garris Simmons.

Mr. Garris was owner of Garris Sales and Service in Conway, NC for the past 43 years.  He had served as Mayor and on the Town Council for Conway and was formerly the Fire Chief for the Conway Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a member of Conway United Methodist Church and a former member of the US Army.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Lewter Flythe Garris.  His son, Neil Garris and his wife Kelli.  Two grandchildren, Morgan Garris

and Justin Garris. His brother, Marvin Garris and his wife Dale, and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 2:00 PM at 

Conway United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hill officiating. 

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Byrum was born July 8, 1940 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Eddie Jones and Minnie Byrum Jones. She was also predeceased by her husband Roy Rogers Byrum.
She is survived by her children, Lorie Ann Byrum, Eddie Melvin Byrum, Roy Rogers Byrum and his wife Debra, Donal Wayne Byrum and Alisa Byrum Bland and her husband Brian. Her brothers, Wilma Jones, Tom Jones, Robert Jones, and Dail Jones. Her sister, Dorothy Williams. Eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Potecasi Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Browder officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery and other times at the home, HWY 35, Conway, NC.

Mr. Billy Shane Parrish age 44, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away suddenly Friday, June 24, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Billy was born June 18, 1972 in Roanoke Rapids the son of William Carlton Parrish and the late Sharon Brewster Wells. He was also predeceased by his grandmother, Toni Brown, a nephew Travis Wayne Hooker and a niece, Ariel Parrish.
He is survived by his children, Isiah Parrish, Haley Parrish and Julie Parrish. His brother, Kelly Parrish and two sisters, Kim Parrish and her fiance Ed Taylor and Raven Parrish and her fiance Ronald Staton. His step father, Charles Wells. His nephews, Christopher Parrish, Keeley Parrish and Lexton Martin. His niece, Crystal Raimondi. His great nieces, Alexia Hooker, Lelaina and Charity Raimondi. His aunts, Freda Worsham and Carol Mulder. Also many cousins.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Billy's Life will be held, Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Ronald L Thompson, 82, of Aulander North Carolina, passed June 29th, 2016, peacefully in his sleep at the Hospice House in Greenville, NC.

The family will hold a private service out to sea at a later date.
Ron was preceded in death by his son Timothy Thompson.

He was survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda Thompson and daughter Amy Scanlan. Other survivors include grandchildren Amanda Scanlan, Abigail Scanlan, Alex Scanlan, Tara Thompson and Alicia Everette; and great grandchildren Jacob and Joseph.
Ron was born in Kelso, Washington; lived in NY, where he and Linda met. They moved to Murfreesboro, NC in 1977 where they both worked at Chowan University for 15 years.

Mrs. Elizabeth Lucas Fuller age 85, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016.

Mrs. Fuller was born July 14, 1930 in Pelham, NC, the daughter of the late Robert and Nellie
Lucas.

She was also predeceased by two sons, Donnie Fuller and Larry Fuller. She worked for
many years at J.P. Stevens and Company in the print shop.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Hall, a brother, Robert Lucas Jr., two sisters, Vivian Massey and Dorothy Majors. Her daughter-in-law, Judith Fuller and her son Jimmy Pair and his children.
Three grandchildren, Christina Dominguez, Tabitha Pearson and Kevin Fuller. Six great grandchildren,
Krystian Latham, Bryson Dominguez, Abigayle Maza, Gabriel Maza, Makenzie Fuller and Sonny Fuller. One
great greatchild, Priscilla Latham.
The family will visit Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 7:00 until 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.
