Mrs. Mary Finch “Bootsie” Hale age 85, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away February 29, 2016.

Mrs. Hale was born October 12, 1930 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Dalton Leonard Finch Sr. and Mary Hardison Finch.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Sylvia Harris.
She worked for many years at Bibb in customer service. She was a member of New Testament Christian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Hale Phillips and her husband Roy of Emporia, VA. Her brother, Rev. Dalton Finch Jr. and his wife Jackie of Plymouth, NC. Her grandson, Wade Phillips of New York.
Her nieces, Trudy Baird of Roanoke Rapids and Cathy Davenport of Plymouth. Two great nieces, Kelly and Heather and one great nephew, Daryl.
Private graveside services were held, Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Dalton L. Finch Jr. officiating.
Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids handled all arrangements.

Mr. Ralph James Vann age 73, of Ahoskie, NC passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Vann was born October 31, 1942 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late James Vann and Ruth Rose Vann.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Barbara Neimer and a brother, Grady Vann.

He was a farmer and loved by his entire family.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Davis Vann. His sons, Grady Vann And Daniel Vann. His daughters, Carolyn Riddick, Melissa Vann, Shannon Vann and Amanda Vann. Eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His sisters, Josephine Falardeau, Frances Conner, Helen Snell, Geneveive Paige and Minnie Liverman. His brothers, Carrol Vann and Joseph Vann.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Brantley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Mrs. Hilda Nelson Cullipher age 72, of Greenville, NC passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Cullipher was born October 8, 1943 in Hertford County, NC the daughter of the late Raleigh Lee Nelson and Nellie Harmon Nelson.

She was also predeceased by her husband Walter Cullipher.
She is survived by her son, Timothy Cullipher and his wife Shelly of Nakina, NC. Her daughter, Jackie Cullipher and her friend Sean Valantino of Winterville, NC. Five grandchildren, Victoria, Ethan, Dylan, Isabella and Kirk.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Hilda’s Life will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 1:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Robert Barmer officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society because of the love Hilda had for animals.

Mr. Loyd Alton “Tator” Parker age 94, of Murfreesboro, NC passed away Monday, March 6, 2016 at Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, NC.

Mr. Parker was born December 29, 1921 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Lloyd James Parker and Cora Beverly Parker. He was also preceded in death by his wife Lila Parker and two sons, Nicholas D. Parker and Lloyd Wayne Parker. He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and served his country in the US Army Air Corp during World War II.
He is survived by his children, Wanda Parker Vinson and her husband W.C. of Murfreesboro, NC, Timothy Parker and his wife Lynn of Franklin, VA and Marlene Parker and her husband Tim Askew of Asheboro, NC. His brother, Bernard “Buck” Parker and his wife Barbara and a sister, Joyce Parker Massengill. Five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 2:00 PM
at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. Al Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Shirley Davis Duncan, 85, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at UNC Hospital.

She was born January 15, 1931 to the late Gilbert and Lillian Davis.

She graduated from Seaboard High school and then went on to attend Chowan College.

Shirley spent many years as a devoted military wife. She was a homemaker and busy mother to four boys.

She spent much of her life in Galatia, NC where she was an active member of Galatia Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and was also an active member of the WMU.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Conwell Spurgeon Duncan; four sons, John Gilbert Duncan (Laura), George Thomas Duncan (Cathy), Herman Jay Duncan (Deborah), and Joseph Conwell Duncan (Sherry); and brother Thomas Lee Davis, all of Galatia. Eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a large extended family and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 13 at Galatia Baptist Church with Pastor David Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 12 from 6 to 8 pm at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to Galatia Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.

Ann Garriss Woodard age 84, of Severn, NC passed away, Friday, March 11, 2016, at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Woodard was born August 28, 1931 in Margarettsville, NC, the daughter of the late Roy Garriss and Hazel Glover Garriss.
She was also predeceased by her husband Calvin S. Woodard Sr. and two brothers, Douglas Garriss and Wayne Garriss.
Mrs. Woodard was an active member of Severn Baptist Church and worked with the Children’s Ministry and was a member of the Women of Faith Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her sons, Calvin S. Woodard Jr, Dennis Woodard and his wife Marty and Ronnie Woodard and his wife Sharon. Three granddaughters, Dr. Danielle Woodard, Callie Woodard and Jeanann Woodard. Her brother, Stanley Garriss and his wife Linda.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Severn Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Corbett officiating. Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC Monday, March 14, 2016 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Annie Cornelia Sumner age 78, of Potecasi, NC passed away peacefully Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Rich Square Health And Rehabilitation.

Miss Sumner was born January 12, 1938 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Floyd Sumner and Ruby Barnes Sumner. She was also predeceased by her brother, Joseph Thomas “ J.T.” Sumner and sister-in-law Virginia Rae Sumner and a niece Ginger Sumner.
She was a retired supervisor at Don Manufacturing for over 20 years and a member of Potecasi Baptist Church and served as a Deacon and worked with Vacation Bible School.
She is survived by her nephews, Joey Sumner, Calvin Sumner and wife Debra and great niece Brandy Sumner and fiance Jason Tinkham.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Potecasi Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Richard Verne Collins, 74, of Roanoke Rapids and formerly of Kansas, died at 8:01 AM, Friday March 11, 2016, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

He was born on March 28, 1941 to Emil Verne Collins and Stella Maxine Collins.

He was preceded in death by His Mother, Stella Maxine Collins, his Father, Emil Verne Collins and his Wife, Lavon Collins.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Collins, Jr. (Lisa) of Missouri and Randall Collins (Debbie) of Missouri; one daughter, Michell Self (Michael) of Tennessee; the children’s mother, Leila Messner of Kansas; one brother, Robert Collins of Kansas; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Mikala, Shalya, Dylan, Kaylin, John and Jeff and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Landon.

He is survived by his step-children Terry Webb and her husband, Boogie Webb, of Roanoke Rapids and Bonnie Kaiser and her husband, Ron Voll, of Overland Park, Kansas and Scott Kaiser of Coon Rapids, Minn, and four grandchildren, Stephen Kaiser, Elizabeth Locke, Virginia Webb and Grace Webb.

He is also survived by his extended family which included Deborah Poston of Lumberton, NC and Anthony “Tony” and Wendy Strickland of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Collins was United States Veteran of the Air Force and he loved to spend time with family and his very good friends. He enjoyed his dog Daisy Mae and was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and The University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He touched the lives of everyone he met and his smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by many.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Richard’s Life will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 6:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Robyne St. Claire Barnes age 20, of Conway, NC, passed away Monday, March 21, 2016.

Robyne was born March 6, 1996, the daughter of Lori Hutchinson Barnes and the late Bennie Barnes.

She was also pre-deceased by her paternal grandparents Bennie C. Barnes Jr. and Mary P. Barnes, her maternal grandmother, Linda Hutchinson, her uncles, B.J. Hutchinson and Bennie Edison Barnes.
Robyne was a Freshman at North Carolina Wesleyan College where she was majoring in Business Administration. She was a 2015 graduate of Northeast Academy in Lasker, NC where she enjoyed attending school and enjoyed playing sports, including Tennis, Basketball, Softball and as a member of the Shooting Team.
She is survived by her mother, Lori Hutchinson Barnes, her sister, LeAnn Howard and her husband Neal and her brother, Larry “L.J.” Barnes.
Her maternal grandparents, James Hutchinson and his wife Joyce. Her fiancé, William Martin. Her uncles and aunts, Jamie Kirkland, Michael Hutchinson, Billy and Anna Turner, Larry and Rachel Bolton, Thelma Barnes, and Clarence And Ann Barnes. Also many friends.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, March 25, 2016 at 2:00 PM at
Conway Baptist Church, Conway, NC with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Darren Lambert officiating. Burial will follow at the Town of Conway Cemetery.

Mr. Ricks was born June 25, 1943 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Napoleon Ricks and Maude Barnes Ricks. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Hazel Ricks Vinson, Mandy Ricks Martin and a brother Henry R. Ricks.
He was a retired electrician and worked for International Paper Company.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis Vincent Ricks. His daughters, Scarlet Ricks Smith and her husband Richard and Crystal Ricks Garner and her husband Mark, Darzette Alston and her husband Kevin. His son, Kencie Brewer. A brother, Jimmy Ricks. Four grandchildren, Collin Smith, Candice Smith, Ashton Garner and Berkley Garner.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Gaston Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Flood and Rev. Rick Barnes officiating.

Entombment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

automobile accident.

Kenny was born May 18, 1971, in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

He was a welder, a loving father and friend.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Faison Maccleman, a brother Dale Turner, his grandparents, Reuben and Barbara Turner and his wife Bonnie Carroll Turner.
He is survived by his father, Bobby “Punk” Turner (Rhonda), his fiancé Britney Shaw, five children, Matthew Turner, Joshua “Jabug” Turner, Allison Turner, Lucus Turner and Jade Turner. His brothers, Tony Turner and Chris Turner. His sisters, Bobbie Smith and Dawn Maccleman. Three grandchildren, Mason, Little Matt and Aden.

Mr. Leslie Howell Britt age 77, of Severn, NC passed away Friday, April 1, 2016 at Life Care Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.

Mr. Britt was born November 2, 1938 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Alvin L. Britt and Mattie Tillery Britt. He was a general contractor before his retirement and served the Military Police in the US Army.
He is survived by his sons, David Kevin Britt and his wife Billie Jean and Barry Keith Britt. His former wife, Carol Britt. His brother, Ronald Owen Britt and his wife Gail. Three sisters, Janet Britt Davis, Anita Britt and Andrea Britt Bryant and her husband David. Two grandsons, David Britt and Dillon Kevin Britt. Also five nieces.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Severn Cemetery in Severn, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Ruth Bracy Baker Smith, age 87, died peacefully at Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Kill Devil Hills, NC on Monday April 4, 2016.

Mrs. Smith was born to Odie Lawrence Bracy and wife Eugenia Parker Bracy on July 11, 1928 in Hertford County, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Graham Arnold Baker, her second husband, Bobby Smith, as well as her parents, five brothers and a sister.
Over the years prior to her retirement Mrs. Smith worked for Ahoskie Manufacturing Company, Kellwood Company, the Tomahawk Restaurant for her brothers Odie and Randy Bracy and Smith Plumbing Company with her husband Bobby Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.
Her survivors include her son Ronald G. Baker and his wife, Clara R. Baker; her son Jerry L. Baker and his wife, Elizabeth A. Baker; her grandson, Ronald Graham “Grae” Baker, Jr.; her granddaughters, Erin Baker Fritsch and Carole Baker Morton; and her great grandchildren Levi Morton, Penelope Morton, Walker Fritsch, Baker Fritsch and Kamryn Baker.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Ahoskie Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.

Jewell Faye Greeson Glover, 80, was born on June 2, 1935, to Ferry Glapp Greeson and Lois Smith Greeson and raised with her cousins in the Bynum Road Community near Galatia, NC, by her Aunt Ruby Taylor after her mother passed away when she was three years old.

She graduated from Seaboard High School and married her high school sweetheart, John Millard Glover, on July 18, 1953.

They were happily married for 62 years and raised five children; living in Margarettsville, NC, first, and for the past 43 years north of Seaboard, NC, on the family farm.

Jewell Faye was an avid piano player before arthritis made it impossible to play. She worked with the youth for many years at Galatia Baptist Church. She also served on the Northampton County Social Services Board, the Odom Prison Board, and the Chowan University Board of Visitors and Board of Trustees.

She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her life was a life of service to others. She traveled with her husband on many safaris and loved the people she met. They began supplying Bibles to those that wanted to know the Lord in Africa and shipped countless cases of Bibles to that continent to help spread the Gospel, even years after their travels ended.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her infant brother Fred and one daughter, Jill Glover Upshaw.

She is survived by her husband, John Millard Glover, two daughters, Joni Glover Evans and her husband Rudy of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Nell Glover Todd and her husband Worth of New Bern, NC, two sons, John Mark Glover and his wife Bonnie, and Matthew (Matt) Brian Glover and his wife Susan, both of the family farm. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: (Joni’s) Laura Boone, Jeff Boone, (Mark’s) Sarah Glover, Mary Glover Jameson (Cal), Rebecca Glover Andrews (Drew), Rachel Glover Colangelo (Chris), John Michael Glover (Bethany), (Matt’s) Catherine Glover, Anna Glover, (Jill’s) Grace Upshaw, Kate Upshaw, Caroline Upshaw, (Nell’s) Tripp Todd (Keatha), Bennett Todd, and Davis Todd. She is also survived by one great-grandchild, Margaret Joy Jameson. She is survived by one sister, Nell Greeson Harper and her husband Dick of Houston, TX and niece Carol and nephew Rick, as well as a host of other cousins and lifelong friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 8th at Galatia Baptist Church in Galatia, NC, and a graveside service will immediately follow on the family farm located at 1373 Peanut Market Road in Seaboard.
The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, April 7th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Carol was born October 7, 1942 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Wilber Wyatt Garner and Mary Lois Jones Garner. She was also preceded in death by her Husband, John Charles Werner, two children, Renee O’Connor and Diane Doan, a brother, Elmer Looney and a sister, Dwana Allen.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl Brown, Doris Tart, Regina Taylor and Chrystal Adams. A brother, Marlin Dean Looney and his wife Linda and a sister, Donna Commander. Her very special grandchildren, Savannah, Travis, Kevin, Lauren and Caitlin.

Mr. Mizell was born July 20, 1929 in Bertie county, NC, the son of the late Eli Edward Mizell amd Burlie Elizabeth Perry Mizell. He was also predeceased by a brother, Edward Perry Mizell.

He was a Korean War Veteran and served in the US Army from 1951 through 1953. He retired from J. P. Stevens and Company and worked for that company for 47 years.
He is survived by his wife Clara Virginia Mayle Mizell, his daughter Wendy Mizell Faucette and her husband Pastor Donald Gene Faucette and a son, Clifton Mizell. Seven grandchildren, Eric Pittman, Jeffrey Pittman, Joshua Pittman, Shay Ward, Gage Mizell, Bridgete Byrum and Bryan Bissette. Three great grandchildren, Allyssa Pittman, Levi Pittman and Lucas Carter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Pastor Donald Gene Faucette officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at the family cemetery in Pleasant Hill, NC.

Mrs. Dullie Catherine “Gaga” Daughtry age 86, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Signature Health Care in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Daughtry was born August 31, 1929 in Louisburg, NC the daughter of the late Roy Atlas Gantt and Beatrice Ann Farrell Gantt. She was also preceded in death by her husband William Daughtry.

She was a member of Jackson Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Steve Daughtry, Cynthia Daughtry and Jean Marangone. A sister, Bengie Stallings and two brothers, Dennis Gantt and Roy John Gantt. One grandson, Josh Daughtry.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Janice Louise Hurdle Dunlow age 77, of Aulander, NC passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Dunlow was born April 9, 1939 in Hertford County, NC the daughter of the late John Willis Hurdle and Irma Mae Lassiter Hurdle.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a friend to all.
She is survived by her husband, Ora Ray Dunlow. Her children, Anita Dunlow and her fiancé Neil Ray, Dennis Dunlow, Willis Dunlow, Ronnie Dunlow and his wife Pam and Bobby Dunlow and his wife Shannon. Her sister, Ann Wiggins and her husband Fred, their daughter Teresa Turner and her son Dallas.
Her grandchildren, Dawson Dunlow, Landon Dunlow, Grant Dunlow, Allexis Dunlow, Jennifer Hyatt and Jordan Hyatt.
Funeral services will held Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Taylor Latham and Rev. Raleigh Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
